Serving up new bloggers, new logos

On Tuesday night, over a few rounds of blonde Sweaty Betty’s (Boulder Beer Company), Scoats invited me and my graphic design partner, Kortney, to be contributing bloggers for Hop Angel Brauhaus – and we couldn’t be more stoked! Kortney, her husband Joe, and daughter Elizabeth live in Fox Chase and are huge fans of the friendly people and unbeatable brew list at the Grey Lodge.

So when Kortney heard that Scoats and Patrick bought the old Blue Ox Bistro – she was excited to not only introduce us to her new neighborhood bar owner, but she was especially pumped to serve up our logo design expertise.

Going off of Scoats’s ideas that he talked about in earlier blog posts, we came up with a few sketches that he wanted us to share with his bar-goers and blog readers.

Tell Scoats what you think. Can you picture either of these designs on the pub’s beer glasses? Leave a comment at the bottom of this post!

Design 1 (top design): This logo idea incorporates the red background from Scoats’s research about the Weimar Republic, and the wings and halo are a more literal representation of the angel.

Design 2 (bottom design): Here, we used a very traditional font for “Hop Angel” paired with a Bauhaus font inspired by a school in Weimar, Germany: The Bauhaus school for the word "Brauhaus."

We really think Hop Angel Brauhaus is going to be the Northeast’s new favorite place that serves us German pints, keeps us company, and hosts game-day get-togethers. So we’re excited to help contribute to this bar’s design choices and grand opening this fall!

Cheers, Aimee & Kortney

  1. The red in design one is showing up kind of pinkish on my monitor (I know, I know, my mileage may vary) but overall I like it. It seems kind of sign-ish. For silk screening or etching on to a pint glass, it would have to be design two.

  2. On the 2nd, I like how the halo completes the middle line of the A.

On another post, any anonymous poster suggested a pint glass with a halo and wings. He/she suggested the wings be little tattered as though the angel had a fun night on the town. I love that idea. My only change on that idea would be an hefe glass rather than a normal pint.

  4. #1 is looking great- I can just about picture this logo on a tumbler glass filled with brew from Hop Angel Brauhaus... kudos on the design.

  5. 2 is too feminine (and this is coming from a girl) #1 is bold and sharp, but I wouldn't mind seeing some font alternatives.

  6. I like both, but I vote for the second - love the hoppy letter h.

  8. Definitely design 1. The Angel part isn't too literal...almost looks like an Eagle. It's also still modern, yet really has a respect for traditional German imagery

  9. #1 is a more concise design. Maybe put the wings on something. A hop nugget being the obvious suggestion. Love the tattered wing / drunk angel idea.

#2 is muddled. It looks like two different logos were put together. Feels disjointed.

  10. I like #2. I think it is more German looking and classy.

  11. Not sure about the color, but I like the first one...there are wings in the Grey Lodge logo; there should be wings in this one...'cause he's taking it to a whole 'notha level.

  12. The second gets my vote..........

  14. ok so Design one is working the old school German influence. I'd tweak it a bit, maybe lettering in white, a thin inset white border similar to a german crest and tilt that halo a bit this angel has been having fun.

Definitely could see it etched on both pints and hefeweizen glasses.
