Philly Brewing brewed a special beer, Broadcaster Brown, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of David Dye's World Cafe on WXPN. We managed to get a couple of kegs before they disappeared.

It's our third and final Oktoberfest weekend of 2011, one last chance to get yer ja jas out.

This weekend we will be featuring festbiers from Spaten and Victory.

On Saturday the Rockers will be rocking from 3pm to 7pm.

Sunday will start off with a wheat beer brunch from 11am to 3pm. And end with Spaten's Tom Neuhauser on the accordion from noon to 4pm.

Irish Weekend? What's that? It's German Weekend! The second of three in Fox Chase.

Cloudy but clear is the hourly forecast for later today, so it looks like we will be outside this evening!

We will have live music by Groovers from 4pm to 8pm. This weekend's featured Oktoberfest beers are from Stoudts, Hacker-Pschorr, and Sly Fox. And we'll have the grill fired up. Come out and join us!

Sunday
We start off Sunday with a wheat beer brunch. Holly posted a great photo of truffled egg toast earlier this week (thanks Holly). The crepes and pancakes are both killer too. This is a brunch not to be missed. On tap should be Erdinger Weissbier Dark or Stoudts Heifer-n-Wheat and Brooklyner Weisse or Sly Fox Royal Weisse.

After brunch, we will have traditional accordion music by Don Bitterlich from 1 to 3pm. Then Guitar Gary plays from 3 to 5pm.

Wow oh wow, both were truly amazing. I'll be back for more this Sunday. The truffle toast was a big hit too yesterday.

Paul Beck found this great picture from what is probably the 1940s.

There are several interesting things that I see. (clicking on the picture will bring up the full size version)

- history pages on the Web mention the hotel where Dunkin Donuts currently is, but this is the first time I've seen a picture of it.

- Rhawn, Pine and Oxford was a crazy busy intersection back then too.

- Oxford Ave towards Rockledge is very rural looking.

- I think that's Steve Buscemi standing about where the insurance agency is now.

- Looks like there used be an Esso gas station back in the day, maybe where the 7-11 is now.

Can anyone make out what it says above BEER on the sign on the hotel?

HOGUST Continues

Hogust continues with these specials:

Slow Cooked Pork Belly Reuben Sandwich - Chef Kevin slow cooked the pork belly for 5 hours. Then he reduced the juices into a sauce for final cooking when ordered. I hear "pork belly" and I think unsmoked bacon and fatty. This pork belly is very lean, with most of the fat having been cooked off.
Scrapple Snack - House made head cheese scrapple (yes scrapple freshly made by Chef Kevin) over beer braised sauerkraut with curry ketchup and fried sage leaves
Beer Braised Schwieneshacken finished with high heat to crisp the outside. Authentic Bavarian pork knuckle, this dish is the definition of hog heaven (if you aren't a hog).
Knack & Beans - Riekers double smoked bacon, knackwurst, with bbq baked beans.
Farmers Plate - a trio of pork items. Should be ready by Tuesday evening

For those looking for something non-Hog, we also have a Grilled Salmon and Arugula Salad.

This Month is Hogust. Next Month Brings Oktoberfest!

We have been kicking it into high gear with Hogust this month. Did you see the post about Chef Kevin's freshly made head cheese scrapple? And there's 25 more days of tasty pork dishesto come!

While we are celebrating Hogust, we are also looking forward to next month which brings our first Oktoberfest.

Patrick and I have been making plans, placing phone calls, and sending emails. Hop Angel will be going all out for our first Oktoberfest, with three big weekends of outdoor fun (indoors if it rains).

Every Saturday and Sunday from September 17th to October 2nd, we will have live music, food, and of course beer. We will feature different US and German fest beers each weekend. Each Sunday will start off with a Wheat Beer Brunch and continue with live music.

Hogust Starts Today!

Hogust is a month long celebration of the incredible, edible pig. Throughout the month, we will have a constant parade of pork specials. Our current specials are:

Gorgonzola Stuffed Figs wrapped in Riekers Double Smoked Bacon with truffle honey and fresh thyme. This is an appetizer sized dish. Four figs, covered with Riekers double smoked bacon with honey and fresh thyme. This one's a winner.
Beer Braised Schwieneshacken finished with high heat to crisp the outside. Authentic Bavarian pork knuckle, this dish is the definition of hog heaven (if you aren't a hog.

Chef Kevin has really embraced Hogust and is literally going whole hog. He has a head cheese scrapple in the works, made in house from a pork head.

And we have loads more to come. You could come in every day this month and literally not eat the same pork dish twice.

Quizzo on Tuesday As usual, Quizzo Lord Ryan will host Quizzo on Tuesday at 8:30pm. This is a great opportunity to share some Hogust dishes and play quizzo.

Pilsner Urquell Keep the Glass Night on Thursday. Starting at 6pm on Thursday, while supplies last, buy a Pilsner Urquell draft and keep the glass. This also is a great opportunity; share some Hogust dishes and walk out with a glass for your collection.

Philly Beer Week, our city's celebration of its amazing beer scene, begins on Friday, June 3rd and ends on Sunday the 12th.

Fri 03 June: PHILLY BEER WEEK - HAMMER OF GLORY RELAY STOPS (BRIEFLY) AT HOP ANGEL, 10:00AM

Getting the Hammer of Glory (HOG), the beloved omnipotent symbol of Philly Beer Week, to the Opening Tap has become a phenomenon in its own right. Every year the HOG makes a crazy journey through the city stopping at various beer destinations until it arrives at the Opening Tap, where it is wielded by the mayor to tap the first keg, officially opening Philly Beer Week. Each leg of its journey features a different method of transport.

The HOG should arrive from Fox 29 Studios at Hop Angel Brauhaus at 10:00am. It will hang out for 30 minutes for a beer and photo ops, before leaving Hop Angel promptly at 10:30am. For our leg of the journey, Miss Hammer (Brittney Killian) will escort the HOG in the back of a convertible waving and blowing kisses to their adoring public.

Why not join us to cheer on the HOG as it leaves for The Grey Lodge Pub. CBS3 will be here, so you might get on the news. More details of the 2011 HOG relay are here.

A Tour of the Taps

We constantly change up our draft beer selection, currently on tap we have:

Radeberger, this hoppy pilsner from eastern Germany is a really great example of the style

Ayinger Brauweiss, this hefeweizen from just outside Munich is one of the best wheat beers on either side of the Atlantic.

Heavy Seas Hang Ten Weizenbock, weizenbocks are wheat beers with extra malt to jack up the flavor and ABV. Hang Ten, from Heavy Seas down in Baltimore MD, is a very high octane version of the style (10% ABV). Small pours only.

Sprecher Hefeweizen - this wheat beer comes from Milwaukee's Sprecher, which mostly specializes in German style beers.

Port Midnight Expressions - there is just one or two glasses left of the last barrel of this pitch black lager. Following it up will be Manayunk Bock, a darker lager from Manayunk.

Ommegang BPA - a Belgian style Pale Ale from Cooperstown.

Troegs Sunshine Pils - an extremely tasty pilner from Harrisburg PA.

Roy Pitz Ludwig's Revenge - a smoked lager from Chambersburg, which is somewhere near State College PA.

Great Lakes Dortmunder - a light lager from Cleveland Ohio. "Light Lager" often means flavorless yellowish liquid, but not in this case. Thinking of drinking a 1/2 liter of this while sitting in our beer garden is a sunny thought indeed.

Port Hot Rocks - this is an interesting one. It's a "stein bier" which translastes as stone beer. Back in the day, rather than trying to get a huge pot to boil directly, brewers would sometimes heat large rocks and lower them into the mash. They would do this several times per batch. This method can create some interesting carmalization of the sugars.

Boulder Kinda Blue - this is a wheat beer made with blueberries from Boulder Colorado. Not just tasty, it also gives you a dose of antioxidants.

Yuengling Bock - a spring seasonal lager from Pottsville giant Yuengling, that goes great with watching the Phillies at Hop Angel.

Some notes from last week:
- I went with German Breakfast Sandwich, a brat with eggs and cheddar. Chef Kevin makes one for himself pretty much every day. If I was 20 years younger, I'd have one these for breakfast everyday too.
- Christine makes a really killer quiche. Truly stellar.
- The Croque-Madame looked amazing. I was told it tasted as good as it looked.
- And we have the traditional Bavarian Weisswurst breakfast, prepared the traditional way.

Quiche spinach, ham, & cheddar, with a side salad.

Nova Salmon toasted bagel, capered cream cheese, red onion, tomato with dill pickle

Croque-Madame hot ham and Swiss, sourdough, fried egg, with scalloped potatoes

German Brunch Sandwich bratwurst, two eggs, melted cheddar, long roll, with fries

Bavarian Weisswurst Breakfest two boiled mild white veal sausages served in water, German soft pretzel, whole grain mustard. Traditionally enjoyed with a half liter of hefeweizen.

Challah French Toast strawberry-rhubarb mint compote and butter, with bacon or sausage

Eggs Benedict with Smoked Salmon or Canadian Bacon English muffin, hollandaise, and autéed spinach, with scalloped potatoes

Omelet peppers, onions, ham or bacon, cheddar, Swiss, provolone or American cheese. Served with scalloped potatoes.

Two Eggs any style, bacon or sausage, with scalloped potatoes

We like to think all of our meals pair well with a .5 liter of Franziskaner.

On Friday which is Earth Day, our friends at Long Trail will have pint glasses with flowers or eco bulbs for the first 24 different people to buy a Long Trail.

Also on Friday, Chef Kevin will have a bunch of lobster specials.

Sunday Easter, we will debut our new brunch menu, 11am to 2pm. For Easter dinner, Chef Kevin will have several specials including quite possibly rack of lamb. More details to come.

The *Burgermeister Meisterburger Burger* is a 10oz beef burger with Swiss cheese, a fried egg, crispy onions, HAB sauce, and ham, and served on a roll big enough to hold all that. And if that ain't enough, it comes with a side of fries. It serves one burgermeister or two (or more) normal people. If you are a burgermeister, tuck on in. If you are a normal person, it is served

Food News
Version 2 of our Lunch/Bar Menu should be ready any day now. Speaking of our bar menu, I finally got around to having our German Wings. People told me about them but I always wound up ordering other items on our menu. Wow, I am craving them as I write this.

Beer News
Previously our draft beer menu was updated as needed. It will now be updated weekly and include not just what is on tap, but what is coming up as well. And you can view it on-line (it looks better on paper).

On tap, we currently have:
Paulaner Salvator, a super authentic doppelbock from Munich, Germany. Originally a Lenten beer, it is now available year round. In 2011, we will have our first Starkbierfest, when we will tap a different -ator beer each Friday during Lent and then end Lent with all of them returning to be tap together.

Berwick Hondo Keller Bier is a keller style beer from Berwick Brewing, which is nestled in the town of Berwick, PA. Berwick is a really cool brewery. They have a great beer garden right on the Susquehanna River, and I hear they make a great pizza. And the beer is terrific. Sadly I have only been there early in the day before the pizza oven was heated up. That is something I need to rectify in 2011.

We have two wheat beers on tap at the moment. Some US breweries only brew wheat beers in the summer. In Germany, they are available year round, and are great with weisswurst for breakfast, but that's another story. Boulder Sweaty Betty is a Bavarian-Style Wheat Beer from Boulder Co. This one bursts with flavor; it is one of the best wheat beers out there. Franziskaner Dunkel Weisse, is an authentic dark wheat beer from Munich. The banana and clove flavors from the hefewiezen join with chocolate notes from the dark malt.

We have three schwarzbiers on tap the moment. Schwarzbiers are black lagers. Think of them as being like stout but mellower since they fermented with lager yeast. Kostritzer, from Bad Kostritz, is one of the oldest producers of schwarzbier in Germany. They have perfected it over several hundred years. Sprecher Black Bavarian, Glendale, Wisconsin, is an excellent Amercian version of this style. Cricket Hill Noctern from North Jersey has been the pleasant surprise of the bunch, being a truly great session beer.

Hofbrau Original is a Munich style helles beer from Munich. Helles means a light colored lager. Some people may dismiss helles beers as not being extreme enough. A truly great helles is one of the hardest beers to make; there's no room to hide any mistakes. The ones that really excel have wonderful depths of subtly.

Sly Fox Rauchbier from Royersford PA is a smoked beer that we have been restocking a lot here at Hop Angel. One of my pleasant surprises is how popular the various smoked beers have gone over. This is in the standard smoker lager style. Fire makes it good; no, fire makes it great. One of my favorites.

The big news is that we are opening our taps to include styles that aren't German. We will still be very heavy on German style beer, but with 12 taps, we have room to squeeze in a few non-Germans. Yes some IPAs will be on tap soon.

The beer to open that door is Troegs Mad Elf from Harrisburg PA. This beer has been a super popular Yuletide beer for several years now. It's a huge 11% Belgian style ale that features cherries, honey, and chocolate malt. For many of us, it's not Christmas without a little Mad Elf. We had to opportunity to get a couple barrels for Hop Angel, so how could we say no. Make sure you drink some water along side this one.

Another holiday beer is Avery Old Jubilation, from Boulder CO. Its an English style winter strong ale with a mahogany hue, a hint of hazelnuts, and a finish reminiscent of mocha and toffee. No spices.

And from the amazing Bells Brewery of Kalamazoo MI, we have their Winter White This a seasonable wheat ale brewed with American wheat and a blend of yeasts.

Getting tapped at noon on Saturday the 18th will be a sixtel (5.15 gallon barrel) of Southern Tier Crème Brûlée. Southern Tier brews some amazing things, as anyone who has ever had their PumKing pumpkin beer can attest. This one is the classic Crème Brûlée dessert in a glass. Truly extraordinary. We could only get 5 gallons of this one; it won't last long.

Draft Beer Update
One my most pleasant surprises at Hop Angel is that people have been asking for more rauchbiers. Rauchbiers are made with smoked malt, which gives the beer a smoky flavor. Personally I love, love, love rauchbiers, especially where the smoke is rather subtle, adding to the flavor, but not being THE flavor. So having other folks dig them too means we get have them on tap more often, which makes me very happy. As Homer Simpson once said, "Fire makes it good".

Our latest rauchbier is Victory Scarlet Sunset, a new one from them. Unlike most rauchbiers which are smoked amber lagers, this one is a smoked dunkelweisse (dark yeasty wheat beer). I cannot wait to try this one. As usual we have three barrels of this one to tapped one after the other.

Last night we also tapped the first of three barrels of Sixpoint Sehr Crisp Pilsner. This the first lager from our friends up in Brooklyn NY, and it's a great one.

Folks from both Victory and Sixpoint will be at our official Grand Opening this coming Saturday the 13th (yes lucky 13). More details daily as we get closer to the big day. The Grand Opening will kick off at noon with a ceremonial pour.

Draft Beer Update

Spaten Optimator replaced Franziskaner Hefe. Optimator is an authentic German doppelbock. Doppelbock's are higher octane (usually between 7 and 8% ABV) dark German lagers. These beers have been called "liquid bread" and were originally brewed to nourish monks when they were fasting during lent. The original doppelbock was Salvator, which is still around. As homage to the original, most doppelbock names end in "ator".

Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest, an authentic Munich marzen, replaced Paulaner Okotberfest, also an authentic Munich marzen. Which do you prefer?

Chef Matt and I went down to Dock Street in West Philly to watch brewmaster Ben Potts brew the first batch of Hop Angel Angel Fuel.

This beer will be super-hoppy. We told him to hop the heck out of it. Well we used a different word, but you get the gist.

Hop Angel Angel Fuel should be ready in about 6 weeks.

Attention Hopheads

We have listened to the hopheads who want a hoppy beer on tap at Hop Angel Brauhaus. Fitting an IPA in while remaining true to having just German style beers (imported and domestic) on tap is hard. Hard but not impossible, if you think outside of the box, and have some capable friends. Well, we do and we do.

What's an IPA?
For those who aren't familiar with what IPAs are, here is a little background. (Those who are all too familiar can skip the rest of this paragraph). IPA stands for India Pale Ale; the name refers to extra hoppy beers that originally were shipped from England to India during the 19th century. The extra hopping helped to keep the beer fresh during the voyage between England and India. The style sort of vanished until American microbrewers resurrected it in the 1990s.

Part 1: Out of the Box Thinking
First part of our German hop bomb problem will be solved by some outside of the box thinking.

What if a 6% ABV black IPA was brewed with lager yeast? Well then you'd have a German style hoppy black lager. Problem solved, or at least 1/2 solved.

While it will sort of be a schwarzbier (German black lager), we think it is actually a new style of beer. It will be hoppy but definitely not an IPA.

So if it's not an IPA, what is it?
- First off, this beer is not really India, except in that will be super hoppy. It's sort of Germany and definitely America.
- Secondly this beer will not be pale; it will be black. Actually the name Black IPA is sort of stupid now that I think on it. The style should have been called India Black Ale. But that is what it is and there's probably no changing Black IPA as a style name now.
- And lastly the beer will not be an ale but a lager.

So how about Germany-America-India Black Lager? A GAIBL The first ever!

Part 2: Having Capable Friends
So we had 1/2 of the puzzle solved. Since this style didn't yet exist, we couldn't just buy some. We needed some brewed just for us.

Happily we have friends who can (and, mostly importantly, will) do that for us. I asked Ben Potts, Dock Street's head brewer. He ran it up the flagpole to Rosemarie Certo, Dock Street's president. She, like Ben and me, loved the idea.

So off we go! Ben started brewing it this morning.

And It Gets Even Better
A beer this unique will need a cool name. We have that covered; the name will be Hop Angel Hop Fuel.

Hop Angel Hop Fuel will be on tap at Hop Angel Brauhaus in Fox Chase, Northeast Philadelphia, and at Dock Street Brewpub, West Philadelphia. If a few kegs wind up at other local accounts, we don't mind - beer is meant to be shared. And Ben is always willing to brew some more.

And It Gets Still Even Better
The recipe for Hop Angel Hop Fuel will evolve based on customer responses. We will ask our customers what they think and tinker with the recipe until we have a beer that Hop Angel customers love.

Draft Beer Changes
Kegs of Franziskaner Hefeweizen continue to turn over. Maybe because it's Irish Bobby's favorite beer and he's in town for the week.

Paulaner Oktoberfest replaced Paulaner Weiss'n. This Paulaner is the old school recipe. And it's from Munich, the birthplace of Oktoberfest.

Warsteiner Pils replaced Spaten Premium. Warstein is a village in Germany between Dortmund and Kassel. The brewery dates from 1753, which makes a little younger than our building. This beer may be the closest thing Germany has to a national brand.

Ramstein Blonde is a hefeweizen from a North Jersey microbrewery that specializes in German style beers. This one is their flagship.

Long Trail Ale is an alt style beer from Vermont. Alt is style of copper ale that originated in Dusseldorf.

Ballast Point Oktoberfest is a festbier from San Diego California. Chez says this is one the best festbiers he's ever had. It indeed is a great dark tasty beer.

Hot Tots
I asked our sous chef Kevin about the Hot Tots listed on our special board. He was very excited about them. Hot Tots are balls of mashed potato, wurst, and cheese that are breaded and fried. It's as delicious as it sounds.

Draft Beer Update

We have run a lot of festbiers in the last 6 weeks and we have seen quite a bit of variation among the beers, variations in color, malty-ness and hoppy-ness. Now we can even see that from within the same brewery.

The last of three barrels of Victory Festbier has kicked. Replacing Victory Festbier is Victory Zeltbier. Victory Festbier is a fest beer in the traditional way, very malty and amber in color. In modern day Munich, they serve a lighter colored beer at Oktoberfest. Zeltbier is Victory's take on this style. It's a lager and alcohol by volume is 6.2%.

Pours a light copper, aroma is floral and earthy, with some light spice and a rather pronounced fruitiness. Hallertau hops really add an earthy and spicy edge to the taste. Finishes with some light citrus peel and lingering spice. Medium bodied.

Light citrus peel and lingering spice... mmm... I'll have to have one after work Saturday night. Maybe we'll get to have one together.

We have 12 lines of beer and we switch up most of the lines after we run three or more kegs of a beer through. Here's what's on tap at the moment and a lot of general German beer info.

Franz Hefewiezen - this is a classic Munich made blonde wheat beer. The name hefe weizen means cloudy wheat beer. Why is it cloudly? Because unlike other styles of beer, they do not filter it very much. They use a special yeast in this style of beer that gives a fruity flavor. This is a classic beer.

Paulaner Weizn - Paulaner is a Munich based brewery, which means they are one of the only breweries allowed to sell beer at Munich's Oktoberfest. This beer is the one Paulaner serves in Munich during Oktoberfest. Over the years, the beers at Oktoberfest have become lighter in color and body. The Munich breweries still make the original amber version, but that is mostly for export to the rest of the world (including us). So this beer is what you would get if you went to Oktoberfest in Munich in the present day (well, actually the near future, since Oktoberfest is over for this year).

Spaten Premium Lager - Spaten is another Munich brewery. This beer is a Munich Helles style lager. Helles means light, as light in color. Originally all of the Munich breweries made a dark lager, or a dunkel. Many still do, though dunkels are hard to find these days, even in Munich. This beer, a helles, is a very nice light little beer. It won't hit you over the head but it is very subtle... subtly, quietly wonderful. Sometimes you want big and loud; sometimes you prefer soft and quiet. This one is for those quiet moods.

DAB - DAB is a dortmunder style lager from the city of Dortmund. The name is an acronym, the D is for Dortmunder and the B for Brewery (Brauerei). What does the A stand for? Good question, let me Google it now. The A is Actien, which means joint stock, or more than one owner.
- Here from Wikipedia is a very detailed description of what makes a Dortmunder an unique style of lager: "The beer from Dortmund is a pale lager influenced by the golden beer from Pilsen known as Pilsner, though is mainly labelled as Dortmunder Export. Like all other pale lagers the beer is a pale gold colour, with a moderate bitterness from the noble hops, a lean, well attenuated body, and a crisp carbonation. The local water contains a fairly high amount of sulfate,^[3] which gives the beer's taste a slight element of sulfur and bring out the hops – see Burtonisation. It also contains more calcium carbonate (chalk) than average which tends to give a sharpness to the flavour of the hops. Brewers use less hops to avoid the harsh hop notes, giving the beers a subtle emphasis on the malt flavours." Long description short: like a Munich helles, but a little hoppier in the Pilsen tradition.

This is probably a good point to mention that each town in Germany tends to make a specific style of beer, and all of the breweries in that town usually only make that style and that style is usually only available in that area of Germany.
- In Dortmund they make dortmunder; Dusseldorf makes alt; Berlin makes berliner weisse; Vienna (OK Austrian but still German for our purposes) makes Vienna lager; Bamburg makes rauchbier, and Munich makes helles, dunkel, marzen (fest), hefe wiesse, and dunkel weisse. So if you go to a bar in Germany, you may only find 1 or 2 styles of beer. In Fox Chase, you may find as many as 12.
- Why are the beers different from town to town? Various reasons including local taste preference, mineral content of the water, what types of hops grow well there, and the style of malting they do there.

Sly Fox Royal Weisse - this is a locally made hefeweizen. Sly Fox is one of the really great local breweries that we are so blessed with here in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Dock Street Bohemian Pilsner - a classic pilsner, which is a golden lager. This one is more Czech style than Munich style.

Left Hand Oktoberfest - I haven't had this one yet, and will need to rectify that ASAP. From the description, it seems to be the more authentic style of fest (which is more popular for US brewers). Since is it from out west (Colorado), I expect it will be a bit hoppy.

Troegenator - this is a doppelbock style beer from Troegs in Harrisburg, another giant among our local breweries. Doppelbocks are dark, somewhat strong lagers, brewed as "liquid bread" to keep monks ticking during times of fasting. This one is based on the legandary doppelbock from the monastery in Andechs, which is a must take s-bahn ride if you are ever in Munich. This a wonderful year round beer that gets a little lost in the shuffle, which is a shame since its great. This beer will not be a stranger on our taps.

Bells Oktoberfest - this fest comes from Michigan. Unlike most US made festbiers, this one is made in the modern German style, so it is lighter in color. I had one this afternoon, a very solid beer.

Manayunk Dunkel Lager - I wrote above about hard it is to find dunkel beers in Munich anymore. Happily they are a little less elusive here in Philadelphia. This one (from over in Manayunk) is a seasonal beer, which means it is not made year round, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Victory Festbier - Victory is another giant among our many great local breweries. They really do everything first rate. This beer was one of their original beers from way back when. It is a beer that is around because it's a winner. It is a US-style festbier in that it is amber in color and a quite a bit hoppier than the German versions. For an American palate, this really works.

Flying Fish Oktoberfish - Oktoberfish is one of my favorite beers and I always eagerly await it's brief appearance every year. This beer is both very malty and very hoppy, a wonderful balance.

Hopheads who have been asking for an IPA... well IPAs ain't German, but we have heard you and have something really cool in the works, just for you! Well you and anyone else who wants to buy some. We should have an announcement in a day or two. You will get the hops you want and we'll stay within our theme of all German style beers.

Tomorrow or today (hopefully not yesterday) depending on when you read this, we will have a mini-Oktoberfest. We will be grilling sausages outside and have loads of fest beers, which will be available in traditional 1 liter glasses. Our full menu will be available as well. And the weather looks like it will be lovely!

Scoats here, I added our bar/lunch menu to the Food Menu page. While I've called it Lunch/Bar (or is it Bar/Lunch), we are still a few weeks out from opening for lunch. Among the noteable items on bar menu are the bratwurst sandwich with fries for $6 and Chef Matt's Frikadelle, a hamburger made with ground steak mixed with butterkase cheese, pickled shallots.

Exterior Looking Good

Scoats here: Our landlord (a truly nice and classy lady) has had the parking lot resurfaced and has had the front of the building painted. Both the blacktop guys and the painters have done fantastic jobs, doing the various little things that are the marks of true professionals. The old building really looks great. Sorry there are no pictures yet, I was too exhausted.

Meanwhile inside:

The cutting out for the new draft system was being done today.
Today they also prepared the floors for the new carpets.
Beer is starting to show up and food should be here shortly.
Pat and Matt bought a new grill and fryer today.
Chris Dominski organized glassware behind the bar.
The computers are up and running.

Menu Update

Hey! It's Pat again.

I wanted to let you know that we are testing the waters, meaning that we're testing steaks, pork chops, and brats on our newly rebuilt Vulcan broiler. Chef Matt and I have been testing some of our menu items, and I have to say that things are tasting pretty good! This kitchen was a successful culinary institution with the Grund family for 30 years and we are up for the challenge to restore the Hop Angel Brauhaus to the same glory.

For me, opening the kitchen at the Grey Lodge, and building it to what it is today, has been very rewarding. The recognition, over the years, that the Grey Lodge has received has been motivating. With the Hop Angel Brauhaus and its previous history and fine reputation to build on I believe that this is a great opportunity and I look forward to a great future for this restaurant.

The 1940s

Paul Beck sent us this picture which is dated 12/29/47. So the part that is now the balcony of the bar area was already there in 1947. It is interesting (to me anyway) that the extension is not at street level but several steps up. Today any public space is built with no steps.

The woodwork on the far end of the extension, which in 1947 housed a barber shop, seems to indicate the extension was built around the turn of the 20th century. At some point before December 1947, the facade of the shop to the left of the barbershop was updated with plate glass windows.

The two mansard buildings to the west have survived pretty much intact.

Progress Update (in random order)

the ceiling tiles for the bar area are here. They are waiting to be painted a copper color before being put in place. It should look pretty cool.
Iggy is painting the upper dining room, which makes up the oldest parts of the building, with really thick walls. The upper part of th walls will be gold and bottom will be dark red (Firefox will NOT giving me a spelling suggestion for mah-rune). The paint will do a great job of simplifying the space and unifying the two halves.
the draft system should be in by Labor Day. Beer should arrive next Wednesday. Our soft opening draft line-up should be announced early next week.
I have been planting flowers in the back. The Grunds left us very good soil, but that's not surprising; everything they did was first rate. I still need to order new window boxes for the front.
we are still waiting for the point of sale system to be installed.
Chef Matt was moving things around in the kitchen yesterday. He should have a finalized menu for us this week.
Patrick is there everyday cleaning and organizing and planning, doing a million things both large and small.
Don and Billy the Hat organized the bar. I need to meet with them to discuss ordering liquor.
the first food order should arrive next week.

All of that means we should be able to announce the soft opening date next week. We will start off opening at 3 or 4pm and increasing to what will be our regular hours of operation after a few weeks.

Pat McGinley's Update

Hey Folks!
Things seem to be right on schedule for a 'soft opening' in the second week of September. Maybe, just maybe, we'll have an Octoberfest grand opening! (Shhhhh, this is unofficial).

Here's what we've finished so far:
- I have spent over 20 hours power washing caked on, and baked on, grease. I will be needing a new wardrobe (according to my fiancee).
- Air conditioning and refrigeration are at 100% , thanks to George Rambo who came through for us when another company bailed out. He did a great job....and he doesn't have a brother named John (I already asked him)
- All plumbing is in working order.
- All electrical work is complete.

Here's what we're currently working on:
- Kitchen equipment, thanks to Mark Doyle (Chez's driver), is 85% complete. We just need to pick up a new char-broiler, fryer, and repair the pan for the steam table.
- Ceiling tiles are in and will be installed next week.
- Painting will be complete next week.
- Still waiting on one more quote for new carpeting.
- We are waiting on our 'Point of Sale' people to install the system.
- Most importantly, we are updating our beer tap system.
- Chef Matt and I have had our first 'menu meeting' on location. The combination of each of our menu ideas, along with ideas from old menus from Mrs. Grund (long time chef-owner of Ye Old Brauhaus) promises to provide a great menu.

Renee's Clean Up of the One Logo Versions

Renee Beaucheane, who worked me on the Grey Lodge logo, sent us this version. I love it.

The version is below is a few changes I made to Renee's design. Renee's design, whether by luck or design, has (lucky) 13 red and white stripes, just like the US flag. My version moves Hop Angel to the bottom and has lucky 13 hops. One change I'd like to make to my modication of Rene's design is to move Brauhaus a little closer to the bottom and make Hop Angel larger to pop out more. I love the font she found.

Don Zverlein Comes Back Home

Pat and I believe in holding onto good people, so I am very happy to announce that Don Zverlein will be returning to the Brauhaus. Don started here with the Grunds when he was 16 years old and never really left. After working several accounting jobs on weekdays, Don came back full time to 7980 Oxford Ave a few years ago.

A few months ago, Mrs. Grund mentioned Don's history with the Brauhaus to us, and that he wanted to come back.

We are very happy to have Don back where he belongs. It's tradition that deserves to be respected, plus we are getting a rock solid crew member. And Don's a beer guy! Plus he can make a great martini. How many wins is that?

Welcome back Don! We look forward to many years of working together.

Some of what we did this week so far:
- we ordered a new draft system. 12 taps, two stations. We'll get a beer engine to bring us up to 13. The beer engine will always have a US style super hopped beer to keep the hard core hopheads happy.
- Patrick ordered a bunch of parts for the kitchen equipment, most of which arrived. He's been cleaning and fixing in the kitchen all week.
- Iggy has been painting a lot of Flyers orange and some Flyers black.
- Ed has been cleaning the kitchen and dining rooms.
- I spent a lot of time in banks.
- We officially went to settlement.
- More nice folks welcomed us to the neighborhood.
- The new soda system was installed.
- We joined the Fox/Rock Business Association.
- Renee Beaucheane gave us a couple more logos to choose from. Her's will be on line soon. Renee worked with me to develop the current Grey Lodge logo, which is still in her sketch book.
-We should be able to set a date for our soft opening early next week.

... and the week isn't over yet.

Serving up new bloggers, new logos

On Tuesday night, over a few rounds of blonde Sweaty Betty’s (Boulder Beer Company), Scoats invited me and my graphic design partner, Kortney, to be contributing bloggers for Hop Angel Brauhaus – and we couldn’t be more stoked! Kortney, her husband Joe, and daughter Elizabeth live in Fox Chase and are huge fans of the friendly people and unbeatable brew list at the Grey Lodge.

So when Kortney heard that Scoats and Patrick bought the old Blue Ox Bistro – she was excited to not only introduce us to her new neighborhood bar owner, but she was especially pumped to serve up our logo design expertise.

Going off of Scoats’s ideas that he talked about in earlier blog posts, we came up with a few sketches that he wanted us to share with his bar-goers and blog readers.

Design 1 (top design): This logo idea incorporates the red background from Scoats’s research about the Weimar Republic, and the wings and halo are a more literal representation of the angel.

Design 2 (bottom design): Here, we used a very traditional font for “Hop Angel” paired with a Bauhaus font inspired by a school in Weimar, Germany: The Bauhaus school for the word "Brauhaus."

We really think Hop Angel Brauhaus is going to be the Northeast’s new favorite place that serves us German pints, keeps us company, and hosts game-day get-togethers. So we’re excited to help contribute to this bar’s design choices and grand opening this fall!

Possible Logo Part 2 and A Little More

Logo Designing Continues
Patrick wanted me to work on angel wings with Hop Angel in the middle. I suggested we add a halo too. Here's what we got so far on that one.

Pat would like the wings fluffier with the appearance of movement. Movement should be easy with wavy lines. Anyone got ideas on how to fluff them up a bit?

Renee Beaucheane has been Auto-cading logo version 1 and we should have her changes soon.

And a Little More
This week involved a lot of cleaning. We also got all of the ceiling tiles in the kitchen replaced, did more cleaning, received some quotes on beer systems and carpeting, did more cleaning, and successfully transferred money for the point of sale system (which was surprisingly hoop filled). Oh, and we bought a new ice machine. And we hired a sous chef named Eric.
